Letter of the Week Theme: D is for Dance

We are working through a Letter-of-the-Week preschool learning plan. Our next preschool weekly focus is D is for Dance! (Find the complete A-Z outline on the letter of the week preschool page.) We have a weekly focus on a letter, number, color, and shape, with games, crafts, songs, and snack ideas to correspond to the letter of the week.

Print the one-page Preschool Weekly Focus and fit in activities throughout the week. These weekly plans are intended to be a reference for ideas to engage with your child and have fun learning together. Don’t worry about having a designated “school” time. Any time you are interacting with your child, engaging in conversation, reading, playing, and exploring the world counts as their school. They are always learning!

Letter Activities

Identify the letter D: look for D in books and on signs
Color, stamp, or decorate the letter D (download a free printable HERE)
Practice writing the letter D (download a free printable for letters C and D HERE)
Go on a letter sound hunt around the house (look for items that start with the letter of the week)
Look at a picture dictionary and talk about words that start with D

Number Activities

Identify the number 4 (can you find 4 of something in your house?)
Practice identifying and writing the number 4 (download a free printable for numbers 3 and 4 HERE)
Number sticker book – add stickers corresponding to the number of the week (download the free printable HERE)

SHAPE AND COLOR ACTIVITIES

Go on a shape hunt around the house, outside or in books
Practice drawing and coloring triangles (download a free printable HERE)
Use a purple crayon to trace and color this week
Talk about things that are purple

Letter “D” and Dance Theme Activities

Play dominoes. A dominoes game is fantastic to work on color matching and counting (the dots) while having fun!
Play freeze dance. Play music and have your little one freestyle until you stop the music and call out “Freeze.” After a couple seconds, say, “Dance,” and let them boogie.
Hokey Pokey Dance. Preschool classic…help them learn left and right!
Play a game with dice. Yahtzee is a great one for this. Kids love shaking and throwing the dice, and again you can help them count the dots. (It’s ok to end the game when they get tired of playing!)
Dinosaur dig. Bury some plastic dinosaur toys in kinetic sand and let your child excavate with a toothbrush or a small paintbrush.
Days of the Week Song (YouTube – The Learning Station). This is a fun version that has them singing soft, loud, clapping, and stomping.
Shake Your Sillies Out (YouTube – The Learning Station). Get them dancing with this fun preschool song.

Arts & Crafts

Decorate with dots. Use do-a-dot markers or dot stickers. You can download printable dot marker pages from Homeschool Creations. Try these fun dot pages from Oriental Trading. Or, dip the end of a Q-tip in watercolor paints to make a dot painting.

PBS Kids Field Trip: Restaurant (YouTube – Peebs) I know the video title says restaurant, but it is a diner-style restaurant, and it is just a quick one minute trip through.

Additional Learning Activities

Practice sorting objects by size. Sort small, medium, and large, or small, smaller, smallest.

For example: dog/donkey/dinosaur. Spread out a collection of toys and have them sort them by smallest to biggest.

Preschool Learning Plan

All 26 weeks provide activities promoting letter, number, shape, and color recognition and formation. In addition, you’ll do projects and play games to develop fine and gross motor skills, encourage imagination, and learn new concepts. Your child will learn songs, play games, and work on tasks that require multi-step instructions.

The recommended reading selections are comprised of both “newer” books and award-winning, classic works to expose your child to a variety of authors and well-known titles. Feel free to add to the suggested titles as desired and make your own choices based on your preferences or availability of material.
