Our letter of the week theme is “W” is for Whales!” (Find the complete A-Z outline on my preschool plan page.) Along with the letter of the week, we explore, numbers, shapes, and colors. You’ll get song, game, craft, and snack ideas, plus printables!

Color of the Week = color gradients (color progression fading into one another)
Shape of the Week = sphere

Letter Activities

  • Identify the letter W: look for W in books and on signs
  • Color, stamp, or decorate the letter W (download a free printable HERE)
  • Practice writing the letter W (download a free printable for letters W and X)
  • Go on a letter sound hunt around the house (look for items that start with the letter of the week)
  • Look at a picture dictionary and talk about words that start with W

Letter “W” and Whales Theme Activities

  • Physical activity: go for a walk, play wallball, or try some weightlifting
  • Play wheelbarrow: hold your child’s feet while they walk on their hands
  • Play with wikki sticks (example at The Inspired Treehouse)
  • Water play with pool noodle boats (from Frogs Snails and Puppy Dog Tails)
  • Weaving: use an open weave basket or plastic woven sink mat and have your child weave ribbon or yarn through the openings

  • Paper cup whale from Crafts Meet Kids
  • Watercolor painting: tape off the first letter of your child’s name on canvas or heavy cardstock, then let them paint the surface with watercolors (see an example at Blissfully Domestic)

Working Flour Windmill in Holland (YouTube – EdmundHollandVideo): Two-minute video showing the exterior and interior of a working windmill.

Virtual Whale Watching (YouTube – DolphinDroneDom): This is almost 30 minutes of compiled footage of a variety of whales.
