Monthly Scripture Encouragement for a Homeschool Year

Homeschooling is rewarding, fulfilling, and gratifying. At times, it can also be demoralizing, disheartening, and discouraging. One way to stay encouraged is to remind yourself of Biblical truth. I’ve gathered a selection of verses from the book of Proverbs to encourage homeschool moms all year long.

These monthly scriptures are reminders of ways to encourage our children and to trust in the Lord for his direction in our homeschool this year.

Proverbs 16:3

At the beginning of a new school year, it’s natural to create plans and goals, systems and routines. Those things are good and valuable. The verse I chose for September is a timely reminder to commit our plans to the Lord. We know his plans are for our good and can trust his wisdom for directing our paths.

OCTOBER PROVERB

A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.

Proverbs 29:11

There are so many verses advising us on the importance of using our words wisely. A month or so into the school year, you may begin feeling frustrated with kids lacking motivation, complaining, or those well-formed plans not working out the way you envisioned. This verse offers caution in allowing our frustrations to spill out in uncontrolled outbursts. Take a deep breath, step outside for a moment, take your irritation to the Lord and ask for his guidance in your situation.

NOVEMBER PROVERB

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Proverbs 27:1

By November, you may be getting into a good rhythm in your homeschool. Maybe your plans are working out even better than you anticipated. Or perhaps you’ve changed plans, curriculum, or methods, in the belief that this new thing will bring about the results you desire. The verse for November should bring humility in regard to our teaching methods, plans, or systems. Our attitude should be one of thanksgiving for the good we see, and our only boast should be in the working of Christ through us.

FEBRUARY PROVERB

Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.

Proverbs 12:25

A typical school year is about half finished now. How are your kids feeling? Are they feeling disheartened by not understanding something? Perhaps they’re anxious about a project or class, a friendship, or something happening in the world. This verse is an excellent reminder to frequently offer kind words to our kids. Make it a habit to praise first before correcting mistakes, recognize and acknowledge when our kids exhibit character traits that display God’s work in their lives, and encourage them with grace when they know they’ve messed up.

Proverbs 16:20

Are you starting to lose a little of your joy at this time of year? Winter may be digging it’s heels in when you’re ready to kick it on out, and you may feel more dreadful than joyful. The answer to the doldrums is right here in our verse for March—trust in the Lord. Our trust is not blind. We trust him because he has proven himself trustworthy in our lives, in the lives of those around us, and in the lives of those we read about in the Bible. Keep a journal of ways he’s provided for you and others you know. Write down the times you’ve been worried and distressed, and record the ways God provides answers, solutions, or unexpected paths.

Uplifting Scripture for Homeschool Moms

We know that God’s word is powerful and true. These 10 Bible verses from Proverbs are just a tiny sample of the inspiration and reassurance available to us through regular reading, study, and memorization of scripture.

I encourage you to make daily Bible reading part of your routine. It doesn’t need to be complicated and you don’t need a year-long plan, although those are great. Start in the Psalms or read through one of the Gospels. The more you feed yourself on scripture and hide it in your heart, the more you will see it reflected in your home and homeschool.
