I always say that I’m not a morning person, but what I really mean is that I don’t like leaving my warm and cozy bed in the mornings. Once I’m up, no matter what time it is, I love mornings. But a little morning motivation helps me think about my intentions and attitudes for the day ahead.
Getting up while the house is quiet and getting a solid hour or two of reading, exercising, journaling, and of course COFFEE, is amazing. I seriously feel like a time management superhero on those days! My morning hours are exponentially more productive than any other time of day.
Most days begin with a daily devotional reading and coffee, although more recently, I have begun to drink lemon water in the mornings before (gasp!) my coffee. The other thing I love to read first thing in the morning is an inspirational quote.
Free “good morning” printable
I created a “Good Morning” printable to share some of my favorite morning motivation. These quotes are focused around priorities, habits, and attitude. I need daily reminders to be purposeful in my priorities, consistent with my (good) habits, and intentional about my attitude.
Recently, I read Laura Vanderkam’s book, “Off the Clock.” It was full of practical advice but also referenced a number of additional resources. One of my favorite ways to find new books is to discover titles that authors reference in the books I’m currently reading. Laura Vanderkam has several books worth a read, a couple of podcasts, and a TED talk to her name. Check out her website HERE if you’re interested in what she has to say about time management.
Each morning is a gift
It was in her book, “Off the Clock,” that I read the quote from Mary Oliver, taken from her poem “Summer Day.” The quote is the last line of the poem, and reads:
“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
Mary Oliver
Doesn’t that just put it in perspective? I had never encountered that poem before, so I searched out some information about the author. Mary Oliver was an award-winning author (Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award) who passed away early in 2019.
This line evokes an appreciation for the beauty of life, along with the poignancy of reflection on its brevity. Each day is a beautiful gift, even, and perhaps especially, when it doesn’t feel that way.
Mornings give us an opportunity to greet the day with gratitude and grace.
