January Birthstone

January’s birthstone is garnet, a deep, rich red stone. The name is derived from a Latin word meaning “seed” because of it’s resemblance to pomegranate seeds. January is one of the few months with only one official birthstones.

January Flower

The traditional birth flower for January is carnation, a flower native to the Mediterranean area and frequently included in bouquets for Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Carnations are available in a wide range of colors, each with a symbolic meaning.

A secondary birth flower for January is snowdrop. The pure white flowers on small plants bloom in late winter to early spring, often when snow is still covering the ground.
