Throughout the Month
Since 1976, February has been designated as National Black History Month to recognize the achievements and contributions of African Americans in our country despite adversity.
February is also National Library Lover’s Month. All the hearts and thumbs up for this one. Support your libraries!
February List of Fun Holidays
The first Saturday in February is Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day! Your kids will want to celebrate this one every year.
World Nutella Day is February 5th. What do you eat with Nutella, you ask? How about Nutella on waffles for breakfast, peanut butter/Nutella sandwiches for lunch, or Nutella to dip fruit in for an afternoon snack? My girls will take Nutella any way they can get it!
Next up is National Chopsticks Day on February 6th; then we’ll celebrate National Inventor’s Day on February 11th. Since I have three girls, we’re going to check out Girls Think of Everything: Stories of Ingenious Inventions by Women.
After Valentine’s Day on February 14th, we’ll celebrate National Almond Day on February 16th.
National Tortilla Chip Day on February 24th might will involve some yummy nachos! February 25th is National Clam Chowder Day, one of my oldest daughter’s all-time favorite foods.
These holidays are practically meal planning for me! We should finish up the clam chowder just in time to celebrate National Chili Day on February 28th.

Seasonal Fun
Valentine’s Day is the big deal in February. It’s a semi-tradition that I make crab cakes for my husband and I to enjoy on either our anniversary or on Valentine’s Day. My absolute favorite crab cake recipe EVER is THIS ONE from Emeril Lagasse. It is a bit of work, but with spectacular results.
Since the crab cakes are time-intensive, I’ll keep dessert simple. As long as it’s chocolate and decadent, 4 out of the 5 of us are happy. A little lemon bar will satisfy the non-chocolate lover.

Around the House
I add a little Valentine’s decor to my hutch. Using totes to keep seasonal decor together and ready to use each year makes it easy to add touches of festive decoration throughout the year.
February is a good time to prune many trees and shrubs. Find tips for pruning trees and shrubs at The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
If you intend to plant a garden, this month is a great time to think about your garden plan. Read more about my raised bed garden plan if you’re interested in raised bed gardening.
I’ll be gathering all the tax return documentation and getting that dreaded task done. No waiting until the last minute around here.
My project for the month is to update our brass doorknobs. And I might get a little jump start on spring cleaning by washing our comforters and blankets.
You can adjust your monthly tasks to fit your family’s needs. My advice is to choose one project or big task to assign to your month. You’ll prevent yourself from being overwhelmed and you’ll be amazed at what you accomplish over the course of a year.

Plan Ahead
Looking ahead to March, I want to start thinking about St. Patrick’s Day. Being my daughter’s birthday, I try to make that an extra fun day. March also means the beginning of daylight saving time for us here in Oregon. Spring break will be here before we know it; I’m thinking now about what we want to do with the kids to make it fun and memorable.
