Reflections on November
List making is one of my very favorite things. This article is part of a series of reflections on things I love about each month of the year. My hope is that in making these lists, I’ll slow down, take note of beauty, and contemplate the moments that matter. Here’s my list of 10 things I love about November.

1. Seattle Weekend Trip
I took a weekend trip to Seattle to hang out with a group of friends. We’ve been friends for 30 years and try to get together once a year to catch up, play games, shop, eat yummy food, and laugh with one another.
2. Dinner with Old Friends
My husband and I had dinner with friends who introduced us and encouraged us to date. It was a lovely evening of reconnecting and reminiscing over incredibly delicious Malaysian food. Getting there was an hour-and-a-half long slog through rainy traffic, but so delightful to spend that time together.
3. Women’s Mini Retreat
November brought way more socializing than I get in an average month! I attended (and spoke at) a half-day retreat for the women of my church. It was uplifting, stimulating, and encouraging to be a part of studying God’s word together.

4. New Haircut
I got a haircut in November and I love the shorter length. It’s probably not too noticeable to most people, but I was feeling frumpy and getting 8 inches cut off was invigorating!
5. Thanksgiving Games
In the past few years, we’ve spent less time playing games than I would like. Busy schedules and teens that want to do their own things have reduced our game night frequency.
But on Thanksgiving Day, the expectation is that almost everyone will play at least one game with extended family. This year I played Crocinole, Catchphrase, and Chinese Checkers. So much fun!
6. Salmon Spread
A few years ago I found a quick, easy recipe for salmon spread that my whole family loves. It’s become a staple for the holidays.
7. Advent Playlist
I started listening to my advent playlist on the day after Thanksgiving. Any time I get a quiet, candlelit evening with a book between Thanksgiving and Christmas, this is my go-to accompaniment.

8. Amazon Wish Lists
One of my favorite things in November is Amazon wish lists. Gift giving is so much easier when family can share an Amazon wish list! I keep wish lists throughout the year, but they especially come in handy during the big November sales.

9. Beef Stocked in the Freezer
For several years in November, we’ve purchased beef from our neighbors who raise cattle. It’s so satisfying to see the freezer stocked with high-quality beef for the upcoming year.
10. Costco Pumpkin Pie
Full disclosure: I don’t love pumpkin pie. But it does make my favorites list because my dad loves pumpkin pie—specifically Costco pumpkin pie—and I was responsible for bringing pumpkin pie to Thanksgiving dinner. I was completely shocked to see that the huge Costco pumpkin pie was only $5.99! What kind of inflation-busting miracle is this? Sign me up to bring pumpkin pie every Thanksgiving!
