Reflections on March
List making is one of my very favorite things. This article is part of a series of reflections on things I love about each month of the year. My hope is that in making these lists, I’ll slow down, take note of beauty, and contemplate the moments that matter. Here’s my list of 10 things I love about March.

1. Decorating for Spring
I don’t do a lot of seasonal decorating, but my kitchen hutch gets a spring makeover, along with some fresh flower bouquets sprinkled around the house. We’ve almost made it through the dark, rainy season! There will be sun in my future!

2. State Capitol Field Trip
Two of my kids and I took a trip to our state capitol for a field trip in March. Plenty of construction to navigate, but we had a good time, it didn’t rain, and we got in lots of steps.
3. Lunar Eclipse
We got to see the total lunar eclipse on March 13th, 2025. We had a perfect view from our south-facing back porch and the clouds cooperated in giving us just enough clearing to see the effect of earth passing between the sun and the moon. Totality occurred for us at a convenient 11:30pm, so we didn’t even have to stay up too late to see it.
4. Spring Break
Since we’re taking an epic road trip in May, we didn’t go anywhere over spring break. Having a quiet week at home did not diminish my enjoyment of spring break in the least. I took a break from homeschooling, kids got a break from most of their extracurriculars, and I got through several little projects that had been sitting on my to-do list for a while.
Here’s my spring break “done” list:
- homeschool planning for next year (not completely done, but most courses/curriculum chosen and some actually purchased)
- ordered photo prints to update school photo books (and for grandparents)
- decluttered two bookshelves and moved books to storage or dropped off at Goodwill
- completed tax returns
- organized notes on phone
- road trip planning (route planned, hotels booked, itinerary roughly mapped out)
- organized closet (pulled out spring/summer clothes and put away most winter gear)
- photo organization (deleted photos, sorted school year photos for using in year-end slideshow)

5. Birthday Fun
My youngest became a teenager this year! She didn’t want a big party, so we did a variety of little things she requested: cinnamon rolls for breakfast, Dairy Queen for lunch, chocolate fondue, and a Percy Jackson themed treasure hunt.

6. St. Patrick’s Prayer
Since my daughter’s birthday is on St. Patrick’s Day, we started the day by reading the traditional St. Patrick’s prayer at breakfast.

7. Farm Fresh Eggs
What’s worse than paying $7 for a dozen eggs? Paying $7 for a dozen eggs while also buying chicken feed for chickens that aren’t laying eggs! This was the worst winter yet for our egg production, but in March, the well-fed hens began laying for us again. Our taste buds and our wallets are loving our fresh eggs.
8. Perusing Homeschool Curriculum
Every year in March I begin thinking ahead to next school year and start investigating homeschool curriculum that we might want to use. I love looking at all the options available for learning and thinking about which ones my kids might enjoy. One of the things I love most about homeschooling is how much I continue to learn alongside my kids year after year.

9. Headache Relief
After many days of headaches and other symptoms in February, March brought some welcome relief from feeling poorly. Any time I have health issues I experience increased empathy for those dealing with chronic illness or pain. I’m so thankful to be feeling better.
10. Fresh Asparagus
Our entire family likes asparagus, and that might be the only vegetable everyone likes. Asparagus in March is tender, flavorful, and delicious. We simply roast it with a little olive oil and salt till it’s cooked but still crisp. Tastes like spring!

What to Love About March
These things seem fairly random, but there was a recurring theme of being thankful for breaks in the rain. Here’s the abbreviated list.
- decorating for spring
- state capitol field trip
- lunar eclipse
- spring break
- birthday fun
- St. Patrick’s prayer
- farm fresh eggs
- perusing homeschool curriculum
- headache relief
- fresh asparagus
Finding something to love, whatever the season, is a way to intentionally focus on gratitude.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…
