Reflections on April
List making is one of my very favorite things. This article is part of a series of reflections on things I love about each month of the year. My hope is that in making these lists, I’ll slow down, take note of beauty, and contemplate the moments that matter. Here’s my list of 10 things I love about April.

1. Peonies
I have three peony plants, one of which is on the south side of my house and blooms earlier than the other two. These gorgeous blooms make me happy near the end of April.
2. Breakfast Burrito
For several years, my birthday breakfast request has been a breakfast burrito from a local Mexican restaurant. Their bacon breakfast burritos are my absolute favorite breakfast food ever!

3. Family Game Time
My middle daughter loves to play games, but with our busy schedules, game nights are less frequent than they used to be. Since her birthday is also in April, she requested a family game for her birthday.
We played Ticket to Ride, Yahtzee, 10,000 dice game, and Quixx!

4. Pretty Floral Glasses
Drinking water out of pretty hand-painted floral glasses makes an everyday meal feel fancy.
5. Pastel Nail Polish
Spring calls for light, pastel nail polish. I’ve been using a minty green Olive & June color and an Essie pink to celebrate spring.
6. Tulip Festival
There is an annual tulip festival in a nearby town that I have never gone to—until this year! Absolutely stunning, and my teens all loved the spectacular backdrop for photos.
7. Easter Sunday Church
I’m a weekly church attender, but there’s something special about singing together on Easter Sunday—celebrating the resurrection and all it means for now and for eternity.
8. New Books
Without fail, I ask for (or buy myself) books for my birthday. I get so excited about digging into my new treasures over the next few months!
Here’s what I got this year:
- Theology Handbook from Daily Grace Co.
- Bible Maps Handbook from Daily Grace Co.
- Bible Themes Handbook from Daily Grace Co.
- Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller
- Turning Points by Mark Noll
- Church History in Plain Language by Bruce Shelley

9. Quiet Reflection Day
A lot of my April favorites seem to revolve around birthday traditions. I try to take one day during the month of April to do a few of my favorite things—read, walk, and plan. If possible, I try to choose a day with decent weather and take an extra walk. I read for at least an hour. And I take time to dream and plan for the remainder of the year.

10. State Gymnastics Meet
This year my daughter tied for first place in her division at the Xcel state gymnastics championships! She’s been struggling with lots of headaches and fatigue lately, so this outcome to her hard work all season was extra sweet.
