Light of the World December Devotional Series
Welcome to Reading 5 of this twelve-part December devotional series. We’re exploring the theme, Light of the World in each devotional and scripture reading this month. Today’s devotional reading is titled, “Promise of Light.”
Does your family struggle to keep up with daily advent reading amid the hustle and bustle of the season? Join me for a flexible schedule of six readings leading up to Christmas Day. After Christmas, we’ll continue discovering the light of Jesus through his life on earth, and consider how we can allow his light to shine through us.
How to Use This Devotional with Your Family
Slow down. Most of us read too quickly for children to understand and comprehend the material. Read the title, subtitle, and scriptures slowly. Pause at commas and allow time for everyone to think about the meaning behind the words.
Discuss. Stop and talk about the meaning of words your children may not know. Ask them if there is anything they don’t understand.
Visualize. The concepts of light and darkness are easy for children to understand. Encourage them to visualize the imagery conveyed in the scriptures and discussion questions.

Start with Reading 1: Light Everlasting
Isaiah 9:2
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
Numbers 24:17 (CEV)
“What I saw in my vision hasn’t happened yet. But some day, a king of Israel will appear like a star.”
God Had a Plan
All along, God had a plan to bring us forever into the light with him. He shared that promise of light with some people a long time ago, and they wrote it down. This promise was a prophecy that Israel would receive a king who would be a great light.
Rejoice in the Promise
Not only did God have a plan to provide light in the darkness, he let us know his plan, so that people could rejoice in the promise.
What a wonderful God! This precious promise declared that the darkness we see in the world will be defeated by our God of light.
When light dawns, it always chases away the shadows.
