Letter of the Week Theme: U is for Umbrella

Our letter of the week theme: “U” is for Umbrella!” (Find the complete A-Z outline on my preschool plan page.) Along with the letter of the week, we explore, numbers, shapes, and colors. You’ll get song, game, craft, and snack ideas, plus printables!

Letter Activities

  • Identify the letter U: look for U in books and on signs
  • Color, stamp, or decorate the letter U (download a free printable HERE)
  • Practice writing the letter U (download a free printable for letters U and V HERE)
  • Go on a letter sound hunt around the house (look for items that start with the letter of the week)
  • Look at a picture dictionary and talk about words that start with U
  • Letter U activity at www.starfall.com

Number Activities

  • Counting practice
  • Practice identifying and writing the numbers 1-20 (download a free printable HERE)
  • Raindrop counting: print an umbrella picture; use blue beads or rocks as raindrops to count to 20
  • Number song 1-20 (YouTube – The Singing Walrus)

SHAPE AND COLOR ACTIVITIES

  • Color and decorate octagon shapes (download a free printable HERE)
  • Color mixing: add grey to colors this week to explore shades. (A printable worksheet for this activity is included in my Preschool Curriculum, available in my shop.)

Letter “U” and Umbrella Theme Activities

  • Physical activity: jump or climb over and wiggle or crawl under objects such as chairs, tables, or blankets, practice underhand throws, climb upstairs
  • Small motor control: bend pipe cleaners (chenille stems) into “U” shapes
  • Listen to rain sounds. Talk about drizzle, mist, pour, sprinkle. Pour, sprinkle, and spray water onto an umbrella.
  • Cupcake liner umbrellas: fold (or cut for scissor practice) cupcake liner in half, bend pipe cleaner for handle
  • Letter U toss: see example at Confidence Meets Parenting. Insert cardboard paper towel tube into egg carton to make base, cut out cardboard “U’s” to use as horseshoes.

  • Unicorn horn: roll up paper into a cone shape and trim bottom; let child decorate, punch holes and add string or yarn to tie under chin
  • Handprint underwater scene (example at Crystal and Comp.)
  • Letter U unicorn craft (see example at Fun with Mama)

Letter “U” Snack and Food Ideas

  • udon noodles

Letter “U” Field Trip Ideas

  • puddle jumping
  • university campus
  • underpass/overpass

**You may need to try a virtual field trip at this point in time. Here are a few possibilities:

Relaxing Ukelele Music (YouTube – BGM Channel): Long video of Hawaiian ukelele music. Introduce your preschooler to the ukelele!

Underpass (YouTube – GrassTec Group): Time-lapse construction of a simple underpass. Skip to about 6:00 minutes for video footage of driving through the underpass.

Sing the ABC song this week for review.

Talk about using “un” before a word. Usual and un-usual. Happy and un-happy. Safe and un-safe. Like and un-like.
