Letter of the Week Preschool Theme: P is for Planets
We’re moving right along in our letter of the week preschool plan. This week we’re exploring “P” is for Planets! (Find the complete A-Z outline on my letter of the week preschool page.) Along with the letter of the week, we explore, numbers, shapes, and colors. You’ll get song, game, craft, and snack ideas, plus printables!
Print the one-page Preschool Weekly Focus and fit in activities throughout the week. Over the course of all 26 weeks, your child will enjoy classic preschool songs and games, and experience activities to encourage development of both gross and fine motor skills.

Letter of the Week = P
Theme of the Week = Planets
Number of the Week = 1-12
Color of the Week = mixing colors
Shape of the Week = pyramid
Letter Activities
- Identify the letter P: look for P in books and on signs
- Color, stamp, or decorate the letter P (download a free printable HERE)
- Practice writing the letter P (download a free printable for letters O and P HERE)
- Go on a letter sound hunt around the house (look for items that start with the letter of the week)
- Look at a picture dictionary and talk about words that start with P
- Letter P activity at www.starfall.com
- Fill a cookie sheet with popcorn kernels and practice forming the letter P. Review as many letters as your child wants to do.
Number Activities
- Counting practice
- Practice identifying and writing the numbers 1-12 (download a free printable HERE)
- Count to 12 using pom poms (great color recognition activity too) or pennies.
SHAPE AND COLOR ACTIVITIES
- Practice drawing and coloring pyramids (download a free printable HERE)
- Use your favorite color crayons, colored pencils, or markers to trace and color this week.
- Mix your own purple and pink colors using blue, red, and white…then paint!
Letter “P” and Planet Theme Activities
- Pattern recognition: make simple patterns for your child to complete using different colors or shapes (cut up paper, Legos, etc.). For instance – square, circle, square, circle _________. Your child would then try to determine that the next shape in the pattern is a square. I have included a pattern recognition worksheet in my complete curriculum set available in my shop.
- Use popcorn, peanuts, pretzels, and peas to make patterns.
- Review shapes and patterns with this pattern worksheet from Education.com.
- Physical activity: pushups, parachute game, hop under/crawl under pool noodles.
- Make playdoh planets
- Learn about the pyramids of Egypt. (YouTube – The Pyramids of Egypt – Free School)
- Planet Song | Solar System Song (YouTube – Preschool)
- Practice using craft punches or hole punches for motor skill control

- Make a handprint peacock (see example at The Spotted Owl Bed and Breakfast)
- Have your child create a paper plate pie or pizza (use markers, paint, crayons, fabric, paper or foam pieces, etc.)
- Letter P penguin craft (see example at Miss Sarah’s Storytime)

**You may need to try a virtual field trip at this point in time. Here are a few possibilities:
Virtual Field Trip to Space (YouTube – Kayla Williams): This 2 minute video is a quick introduction to the planets and their position related to the sun.
How USPS Sorts Mail (YouTube – Insider): Fast moving less than 2 minute video about how mail is processed. Preschoolers should be intrigued by the machines and fast pace, but you will need to read the captions to them as there is no narration, just an instrumental background.

This one-page plan lists all the ideas we covered for letter, number, shape, color, and animal activities for the week. Use the preschool letter of the week to intentionally engage with your child and more than anything READ, READ, READ with them.
The recommended reading selections are comprised of both “newer” books and award-winning, classic works to expose your child to a variety of authors and well-known titles. Feel free to add to the suggested titles as desired and make your own choices based on your preferences or availability of material.
