Letter of the Week Theme: H is for Home
The letter of the week focus today is “H” is for Home! (Find the complete A-Z outline on my letter of the week preschool page.) Along with the letter of the week, we explore, numbers, shapes, and colors. Each week incorporates songs, games, crafts, and snack ideas.
Print the one-page Preschool Weekly Focus and fit in activities throughout the week. Over the course of all 26 weeks, your child will enjoy classic preschool songs and games, and experience activities to encourage development of both gross and fine motor skills.

- Identify the letter H: look for H in books and on signs
- Color, stamp, or decorate the letter H (download a free printable HERE)
- Practice writing the letter H (download a free printable for letters G and H HERE)
- Go on a letter sound hunt around the house (look for items that start with the letter of the week)
- Look at a picture dictionary and talk about words that start with H

- Counting practice
- Practice identifying and writing the number 7 (download a free printable for 7 and 8 HERE)
SHAPE AND COLOR ACTIVITIES
- Practice drawing and coloring cylinders (download a free printable HERE)
- Look for cylinder shapes (blocks, cans, jars, binoculars, batteries, pipes, candles, etc.)
- Use a beige crayon to trace and color this week.
- Talk about things that are beige.
Letter “H” and Home Theme Activities
- Talk about how to have a conversation: hello, how are you? Practice with family or stuffed animals. Hi, my name is… How are you today?
- play with a hula hoop, hopscotch, high kicks, high jump, hide-and-seek
- talk about rural life and city life, different kinds of homes, what makes your house feel like home (Town Mouse and Country Mouse read-aloud)
- Ultimate Helicopters (YouTube – Helicopter Videos for Children)
- Horse video: Introduction to spring, summer, fall, winter (YouTube – All Things Animal TV)
- We’re Going on a Bear Hunt (YouTube – The Kiboomers). Emphasize the “h” sound in hunt, talk about over, under, and through.

Letter “H” and Home Theme Arts & Crafts
- Hand print horse. See an example from 123 Play and Learn.
- Make a paper plate hedgehog. See an example at Fiche-Maternelle. Even if you don’t know French, you can follow along with the excellent visual directions. It is a simple project, and your child can help fold, color, and cut the fringe.

Letter “H” Field Trip Ideas
- hike

**You may need to try a virtual field trip at this point in time. Here are a few possibilities:
Kids Explore Beaver Lodges and Dams (YouTube – The River and Wilder Show): kids hike in the woods in search of a beaver sighting.
How Do Bees Make Honey (YouTube – Maddie Moate): Short explanation of how bees make honey with footage of bees gathering nectar and bringing it to the hive. A little detail about the process of bees throwing up the nectar into one another’s stomachs will delight those kids who enjoy the gross stuff!
Additional Preschool Learning Activities
Have your child give you instructions to make a sandwich, and follow instructions exactly. Help them work on being detailed and specific.
Review the 7 days of the week again. Using a song is especially helpful for remembering.

Preschool Letter of the Week Learning Plan
All 33 weeks provide activities promoting letter, number, shape, and color recognition and formation. In addition, you’ll do projects and play games to develop fine and gross motor skills, encourage imagination, and learn new concepts. Your child will learn songs, play games, and work on tasks that require multi-step instructions.
The recommended reading selections are comprised of both “newer” books and award-winning, classic works to expose your child to a variety of authors and well-known titles. Feel free to add to the suggested titles as desired and make your own choices based on your preferences or availability of material.
