Light of the World December Devotional Series
Welcome to Reading 12, the final reading of this twelve-part December devotional series. We’re exploring the theme, Light of the World in each devotional and scripture reading this month. Today’s devotional reading is titled, “Let Your Light Shine.”
If you’re just joining this series, feel free to jump in here, or go back and start at the beginning. Each devotional reading takes less than 10 minutes. In this week after Christmas, we continue discovering the light of Jesus through his life on earth, and consider how we can allow his light to shine through us.
How to Use This Devotional with Your Family
Slow down. Most of us read too quickly for children to understand and comprehend the material. Read the title, subtitle, and scriptures slowly. Pause at commas and allow time for everyone to think about the meaning behind the words.
Discuss. Stop and talk about the meaning of words your children may not know. Ask them if there is anything they don’t understand.
Visualize. The concepts of light and darkness are easy for children to understand. Encourage them to visualize the imagery conveyed in the scriptures and discussion questions.

Start with Reading 1: Light Everlasting
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Micah 7:8
Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.
God Provides the Power
No matter how much you try to do all the right things, you will mess up. God intends for us to rely on his power, not our own. It is so important to read his word. The Bible is his letter to us, giving us examples of good choices and bad choices, and principles that help us make good decisions.
Above all, it’s the best way for us to get to know God’s character and how he wants to relate to us.
Hearts Reflect Worship
As we learn about his grace, mercy, and love for us, we develop our relationship with him. Our hearts are naturally changed, and the light that was planted in us glows and reflects worship and praise back to him.
Start a Bible Reading Plan
Take time today to decide on a plan for reading your Bible next year. You can start a Bible read-thru, or pick one book of the Bible, like John, and after you finish that, start another book of the Bible.
You may find that reading first thing in the morning helps you stay consistent with your Bible reading and provides encouragement to start your day.
But, if there is a certain time of day that works better with your schedule, that’s okay, too.
Commit to reading his word and ask him to give you a desire to get to know him better. God will answer that prayer.

He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
