List of Books Your Child Should Read
Looking for a reading list for your kids this summer…or any time of year? The Mensa Foundation has a program called “Mensa for Kids’ Excellence in Reading.” You may have heard of Mensa; it is a membership society for individuals with IQ scores in the top two percent of the general population. Mensa for Kids provides resources and connections for bright kids.
There are four reading lists to choose from in the “Mensa for Kids’ Excellence in Reading Program”, grouped by grade level (K-3, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12). Your child reads the books on their list and rates each book. Once you complete the list, submit it and receive a certificate and t-shirt. Books read to your kids count towards this program, so this would be a fantastic read-aloud list to work through if you have younger kids.
See their website https://www.mensaforkids.org/achieve/excellence-in-reading/ for the complete rules and to download the reading lists. Here’s a preview of the K-3 reading list:
My kids regularly ask to visit our local library to look for more books on the list. This kids’ reading list has spurred my 1st-grader to attempt books that she otherwise wouldn’t have tried. She and I take turns reading a page or two so she doesn’t feel overwhelmed by the chapter books.
Track Your Kids’ Reading
Have your kids use a reading journal to keep track of all the books they read or listen to. Here are a few fun options…
I also have a Reading Log Bundle available in my Etsy shop with multiple options for tracking your reading lists.
