Light of the World December Devotional Series
Welcome to Reading 4 of this twelve-part December devotional series. We’re exploring the theme, Light of the World in each devotional and scripture reading this month. Today’s devotional reading is titled, “Glimpses of Light.”
Does your family struggle to keep up with daily advent reading amid the hustle and bustle of the season? Join me for a flexible schedule of six readings leading up to Christmas Day. After Christmas, we’ll continue discovering the light of Jesus through his life on earth, and consider how we can allow his light to shine through us.
How to Use This Devotional with Your Family
Slow down. Most of us read too quickly for children to understand and comprehend the material. Read the title, subtitle, and scriptures slowly. Pause at commas and allow time for everyone to think about the meaning behind the words.
Discuss. Stop and talk about the meaning of words your children may not know. Ask them if there is anything they don’t understand.
Visualize. The concepts of light and darkness are easy for children to understand. Encourage them to visualize the imagery conveyed in the scriptures and discussion questions.

Start with Reading 1: Light Everlasting
Nehemiah 9:12
By day you led them with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light on the way they were to take.
Psalm 119:130
The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding…
God Did Not Abandon Us
Once people turned away from God’s light, our world became dark. But God did not abandon us! Throughout human history, we see glimpses of his light. He provided light to guide his people through a dark desert thousands of years ago. Many people we read about in the Bible were devoted to sharing and teaching his ways.
Light for Our Path
Now, we have these words written down for us to provide a light for our path. That is what the Bible does for us. It gives us a guide for navigating through life, and illuminates the character of God so that we can worship him.
Glimpses of Light Discussion Questions
Imagine walking through a dark forest at night. How would you feel? Wouldn’t you want a light to shine ahead of you?
Can you think of an example of something in God’s word pointing you in the right direction like a light for your path?
Thank God for his word and ask him to give you the desire to read his word daily.
