What to Do in June: Holidays

National Camping Month

June is National Camping Month. If you’re a camping family, you may want to explore one of our beautiful national or state parks. For those who aren’t able to take a trip to the wild, set up a tent in the backyard and let your child camp out. They’ll love it!

Father’s Day

The third Sunday of June is Father’s Day. Tell dad how much you love and appreciate him. Those with younger kids can have them fill out a simple Father’s Day memory page. I’ve included one in my Monthly Themed Activity Pack. This set of printables contains 12 activities for kids to correspond to holidays or seasonal occasions throughout the year.

June List of Fun Holidays

Here are some of the quirky, wacky “holidays” that occur in June. These are fun to celebrate with your kids for a little treat, a little learning, and a whole lot of fun.

Say Something Nice Day

Celebrate National Say Something Nice Day on June 1st. Make a point to say something nice to everyone in your home today, and encourage your kids to say something nice to each other, to friends, and even strangers!

National Cheese Day

June 4th is National Cheese Day. Try a cheese you’ve never tried before. Have cheese and crackers for lunch, or make a fancy cheese board appetizer.

Iced Tea Day

National Iced Tea Day is June 10th. Sit on the porch and sip a glass of refreshing iced tea. Maybe your kids can set up an iced tea stand today. Check out this simple and delicious cold brew iced tea recipe from Cookie + Kate.

Corn on the Cob Day

National Corn on the Cob Day is June 11th. My family loves corn on the cob and looks forward to fresh summer corn all year. Good sweet corn needs minimal cooking time. Just simmer in boiling water for about 5 minutes before adding butter, salt, and pepper. One fun trick is to add a cube of butter to your boiling water after you add the corn. It will melt and float on the surface of the water. When you use your tongs to remove the corn, you’ll pull it right through the melted butter and each corn cob will receive a mess-free coating of flavorful melted butter.

National Red Rose Day

June 12th is National Red Rose Day. Visit a rose garden or surprise someone with a red rose. Your kids could also follow a YouTube drawing tutorial to draw a red rose as a fun art project today.

Strawberry Shortcake Day

National Strawberry Shortcake Day is June 14th. June is strawberry season in the Pacific Northwest, and strawberry shortcake is the quintessential dessert to showcase yummy local strawberries. Make your own completely homemade strawberry shortcake with this easier-than-you-can-believe strawberry shortcake recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction.

National Photography Day

Celebrate National Photography Day on June 15th. Document your day in pictures, or learn a tip to improve your photos. Here’s a fun list of photo ideas to document a day-in-the-life on national photography day. You’ll experience a trip down memory lane every time you look back at it.

  • morning routine (putting on makeup, making breakfast, taking the dog for a walk, or sipping your first cup of hot coffee)
  • your workplace, desk, current project, or to-do list
  • favorite drink, a meal you ate, book you’re reading, movie you watched, workout, what you wore
  • kids activities: dress-up, drawing, playing with favorite toys, falling asleep, laughing, concentrating on something

The beautiful thing about taking digital pictures is you can take as many as you like, and simply delete the ones you don’t want to keep.

National Fudge Day

June 16th is National Fudge Day. Find a list of over 100 fudge recipes from Crazy for Crust and pick a new flavor to try today. Or, stick with classic chocolate and make an easy microwave fudge your kids can whip up themselves.

Eat Your Vegetables Day

National Eat Your Vegetables Day is June 17th. Straight from sugary, delicious fudge on the 16th to a plate full of vegetables on the 17th! Encourage your kids to eat vegetables at every meal today.

Make a veggie omelet for breakfast, or even just add a slice of tomato (we’ll pretend it’s a vegetable for today). Make vegetables the star at lunch with a veggie platter buffet. Have your kids use the veggies to make a face or create a nature scene on their plate. At dinner, try a vegetable you’ve never tried before.
