Letter of the Week Theme: Q is for Queens
Next up in our Letter of the Week Preschool Plan is the letter Q. Tough letter, but we’re going with the theme “Q” is for Queens & Kings! (Find the complete A-Z outline on my letter of the week preschool page.) Along with the letter of the week, we explore, numbers, shapes, and colors. You’ll get song, game, craft, and snack ideas, plus printables!

Letter Activities
- Identify the letter Q: look for Q in books and on signs
- Color, stamp, or decorate the letter Q (download a free printable HERE)
- Practice writing the letter Q (download a free printable for letters Q and R HERE)
- Go on a letter sound hunt around the house (look for items that start with the letter of the week)
- Look at a picture dictionary and talk about words that start with P

- Practice identifying and writing the numbers 1-12 (download a free printable HERE)
SHAPE AND COLOR ACTIVITIES
- Color and decorate crowns (download a free printable HERE)
- Use your metallic color crayons, colored pencils, or markers to trace and color this week.
Letter “Q” and Queens Theme Activities
- Practice making a question mark. Use pencil and paper, fingerpaints, draw in sand or salt on a tray.
- Go on a quest: Hide quarters around the house and mark the spots with a question mark.
- Quilt quarter toss: Write instructions on 12 pieces of paper (touch your toes, find a spoon, turn in a circle); tape the papers together into a quilt shape; have your child toss a quarter onto the paper quilt and follow the instruction.
- Quick time game: Set up a start and finish line; give an instruction like bear crawl, run, hop, slide, and use a stopwatch to time them doing it three times; tell them which time was the quickest – 1st, 2nd, or 3rd
- Question time: ask your child 12 yes/no questions (are you wearing blue? do you have a dog?); then let them try asking you 12 questions.
- Practice folding a square piece of paper into quarters (half, and half again)

Letter “Q” and Queens Theme Arts & Crafts
- Make a paper quilt: give your child 12 equal size squares of colorful paper and have them draw a picture on each; glue onto construction paper to make a quilt.
- Print a crown template from First Palette and decorate with metallic colors (crayon, marker, jewels)

**You may need to try a virtual field trip at this point in time. Here are a few possibilities:
Buckingham Palace Tour (YouTube – BBC London): Two minute, 360 degree tour of Buckingham Palace interiors.
A Day at a Rock Quarry (YouTube – Joe Rock): For kids interested in machinery, this simple video shows the work going on at a rock quarry.
Additional Preschool Activities This Week
Sing the ABC song this week for review.
Practice learning your phone number (mom or dad’s cell phone number, whatever number you want your child to memorize).
