Reflections on October
List making is one of my very favorite things. This article is part of a series of reflections on things I love about each month of the year. My hope is that in making these lists, I’ll slow down, take note of beauty, and contemplate the moments that matter. Here’s my list of 10 things I love about October.

1. Anniversary
October is our wedding anniversary so it’s always a favorite. I’m so grateful to have had more than 20 years of happy marriage!
2. Birthday Trip to Seattle
We took a quick trip to Seattle to celebrate a family birthday and it was absolutely perfect. Or as close to perfect as we’ll ever get for a family vacation where we’re trying to juggle the wishes of five different people. Relaxing, nostalgic (I used to live in Seattle), and adventurous (paddling in a tiny rowboat on a big lake). Plus our rental had absolutely spectacular views of the Seattle skyline and Lake Union.
3. Scarves + Hats
October mornings have been cool enough to bust out the beanies for my morning walk. I love wearing scarves in the fall and winter—so cozy.

4. Foggy Mornings in the Orchard
My drive to town passes by a lovely orchard ablaze with fall color in October. The early morning fog often settles in the valley right there and the combination of the misty white fog with glowing autumn leaves is stunning.
5. Beach Trip
I was able to get away on my own for another quick trip with some women from my church to view a virtual Christian women’s conference. It was refreshing to be able to encourage one another and learn together!
6. Crock pot Soup
October means the beginning of soup season for us. We all enjoy a chicken tortilla soup, ham & corn chowder, or chili.
7. Fall Festival
Our whole family volunteered at the fall festival our church held in October. So much fun to see the kiddos who came having a great time and to be part of a group of people seeking to love our neighbors. I went as Mary Poppins!
8. Quiet Sunday Afternoon
One of my favorite October memories was a quiet Sunday afternoon. I had no obligations after church, so the kids and I cooked lunch together and did a quick cleanup while the food was in the oven. Then I turned on quiet music, lit a candle, and sat on the couch with a book and a cup of tea for about two hours. These moments are few and far between, but I that causes me to savor them even more when I do get these lovely, relaxing moments.

9. Salted Caramel Tea
The tea I enjoyed is the Bigelow Salted Caramel black tea. I usually stick to chamomile tea in the evenings, but this salted caramel is my go-to tea for fall afternoons.
10. Carrot Cake Muffins
My youngest daughter found a spectacular carrot cake muffin recipe and made it for us in October. I’m generally not a huge fan of carrot cake, but these muffins were moist and delicious and for our family…raisin free!
