August Birthstone
August’s birthstone is peridot, known for its bright lime-green color. The color can vary from yellow-green to a deeper olive green depending on the amount and type of iron present in the stone. This mineral is often found in volcanic rocks, and occasionally found in meteorites!
August is one of the few months to have two additional birthstones associated with it: sardonyx and spinel.
August Flower
The traditional birth flower for August is the poppy. Poppies have crinkled blossoms that resemble tissue-paper flowers and have been associated with a symbolic remembrance. They have been famously painted by Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.
August also has a secondary birth flower, the gladiolus, part of the iris family. These flowers grow tall, colorful spikes of blooms, and symbolically represent strength.
August Quote or Poem
“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes in the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”
John Lubbock
