Light of the World December Devotional Series
Welcome to Reading 11 of this twelve-part December devotional series. We’re exploring the theme, Light of the World in each devotional and scripture reading this month. Today’s devotional reading is titled, “Light Will Overcome.”
If you’re just joining this series, feel free to jump in here, or go back and start at the beginning. Each devotional reading takes less than 10 minutes. In this week after Christmas, we continue discovering the light of Jesus through his life on earth, and consider how we can allow his light to shine through us.
How to Use This Devotional with Your Family
Slow down. Most of us read too quickly for children to understand and comprehend the material. Read the title, subtitle, and scriptures slowly. Pause at commas and allow time for everyone to think about the meaning behind the words.
Discuss. Stop and talk about the meaning of words your children may not know. Ask them if there is anything they don’t understand.
Visualize. The concepts of light and darkness are easy for children to understand. Encourage them to visualize the imagery conveyed in the scriptures and discussion questions.

Start with Reading 1: Light Everlasting
2 Corinthians 4:6 (NIrV)
God said, “Let light shine out of darkness.” He made his light shine in our hearts. His light gives us the light to know God’s glory. His glory is shown in the face of Christ.
Revelation 22:5
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.
Jesus Defeats Darkness
In our very first reading, we talked about God being the source of light—light eternal. Jesus, the light of the world, defeated the darkness of sin through his sacrificial death on the cross
The Future is Bright
God’s plan for his creation is not completed yet, but it is absolutely certain that he will do what he says he will do. We can look forward to a future that is full of light when we bow our hearts to the one who is light.
At Christmas, we talk a lot about our God of love, hope, and peace, and he is all of those things. But he is also a God of great power, able to utterly defeat the darkness of this world.
We Will Worship
God’s word tells us that heaven will have no pain or sorrow. That means no sickness, no cruelty, just joy and beauty and light.
We will sing his praise forever when we see his glory in heaven. We will bow down and worship him as the light of the world.
