Light of the World December Devotional Series
Welcome to Reading 9 of this twelve-part December devotional series. We’re exploring the theme, Light of the World in each devotional and scripture reading this month. Today’s devotional reading is titled, “Light Received.”
If you’re just joining this series, feel free to jump in here, or go back and start at the beginning. Each devotional reading takes less than 10 minutes. In this week after Christmas, we continue discovering the light of Jesus through his life on earth, and consider how we can allow his light to shine through us.
How to Use This Devotional with Your Family
Slow down. Most of us read too quickly for children to understand and comprehend the material. Read the title, subtitle, and scriptures slowly. Pause at commas and allow time for everyone to think about the meaning behind the words.
Discuss. Stop and talk about the meaning of words your children may not know. Ask them if there is anything they don’t understand.
Visualize. The concepts of light and darkness are easy for children to understand. Encourage them to visualize the imagery conveyed in the scriptures and discussion questions.

Start with Reading 1: Light Everlasting
2 Samuel 22:29
You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.
Psalm 56:13
For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
Our Echoing Light
The light of Jesus ignites a little echoing light inside our hearts when we start to follow him. God begins to change our hearts, making us want to choose his perfect ways instead of our own selfish ways, as we become more and more like Jesus.
Receive the Light
You must receive the gift Jesus offers for yourself. No one else can do it for you. You don’t automatically qualify because your parents accepted the gift of salvation Jesus offers.
The more you get to know God by reading his word and talking to him, the more you will learn about his wondrous love for you. His light will change your heart!
Light Received Discussion Questions
Have you received the gift Jesus offers and turned from darkness to light?
Are you asking Jesus to change your heart?
Do that right now. Ask God to give you a heart that wants more and more of his light and less and less of the darkness in the world.
